Spring flowers are beautiful and fragrant. Here is a list of flowers that blooms in the early spring: Anemone ranunculoides, Bloodroot, Dutch Crocus, Dewberry, Dog’s Mercury, Early Star-of-Bethlehem, Eastern Redbud, Ghostflower, Helianthemum apenninum, Hyacinth, Iris, Lasthenia conjugens, Lesser celandine, Luzula campestris, Ranunculus, Scilla, Snowdrop, Snowflake, Sterculia colorata, Tussilago farfara (Coltsfoot).
Spring flowers tend to be those that grew and stored energy in the previous growing season, then went dormant during cold weather. Scientists are still exploring the mystery of how bulbs, shrubs, perennials, and biennials know when to bloom in the spring! Crocus are considered by many as the first spring flowers, however many minor bulbs bloom even earlier during spring. These early bloomers are usually short and small, but if planted in mass, they can be most effective in the landscape.
