Preparing the Soil for Gardening

Preparing the soil is one of the most important steps in gardening. The mineral balance is an important element in all types of soil. The amazing results can be achieved by balancing the major minerals calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium in the soil. This process is known as soil fertilization. The soil system is viewed by the soil scientists as a triple-phased system of solid, liquid and a gaseous phases. The plant nutrients are based in the solid phase and their usual pathway to the plant roots is through the liquid phase (soil solution). The ideal garden soil fertilizer would be one that supplied every needed element of nutrition for the crop being grown, at a rate that would take advantage of all available light, heat, moisture and oxygen needed by plants. Chemical and mineral fertilizers are more readily available for immediate use by plants, while organic materials (which must undergo more involved decomposition before they can be absorbed) are slower in action and last longer in the soil.
